NEXT GLOBAL CONCERT EXCHANGE

Our next event is scheduled for November 10, 2019 at 4pm local time in Louisville, Cambridge, and Hofheim, with a special thematic focus on the environment and climate change. Composer John McDonald of Tufts University has been commissioned to write the featured work, Clime Climb. The piece is a metaphor for working together to address climate change, building on community to make small inroads that lead to large changes. He writes, “Every phrase in the piece will ascend, as if climbing steps. Some people climb stairs several at a time, others one at a time. Slower, faster, rushing, patient—but all these steps are incremental. In this way, the playable parts for community members can vary quite a bit.” The central performer of the work is a flute soloist, as all three performer-educators leading the project are flutists. McDonald explains, “[The solo flute part] would be played twice. The second time through, students and/or other professional musicians would join with their own melodic and/or harmonic parts. This ‘community section’ of the piece will be planned with enough freedom to let people play what they have and be somewhat inventive with it.”
